This Independence Day, Tyler, Hannah and I found ourselves in NYC. We took the megabus to New York City early July 4th to meet my family who were due to arrive later that day. Our bus dropped us off at 8 a.m. and we weren't meeting until evening, so, we thought, what better way to celebrate liberty than at the Statue of Liberty? Well, apparently everyone else had similar thoughts, because we spent the next 6 hours in lines like this:

| Don't let those umbrellas fool you, it wasn't raining. It was sunny and HOT. |
After the trials of long lines, brusque security guards, a lack of water, and Hannah pooping all over the ferry deck on the way to the statue, Tyler and I truly felt like the tired, the poor, the huddled masses yearning to breathe free.

Finally, though, we made it to the statue. She truly was colossal and we were grateful for her shade as we recovered from our long boat ride. Seriously, though, it was awe-inspiring to visit the Statue of Liberty and ponder on her symbolism and significance.

Later that evening, we met up with the Harlans and joined the literal millions of others watching the fireworks over the Hudson river. They call them skyscrapers for a reason; unfortunately the buildings blocked a lot of the fireworks, but we still watched a good show! We love you, America!
