Hello All! So we officially survived our first hurricane together and are feeling more and more like east-coasters. It was quite a ride! We went from baths, Baltimore, and beautiful fall foliage (see pictures below), to one of the nastiest storms of the year.
Fortunately, we weren't hit as hard in our area as we originally feared. Tyler, Hannah and I had gone to Baltimore for the weekend to meet Grandma Barbara and were planning to return Sunday evening. However, when I got a text from my friend informing us that Delaware City had an evacuation order and was in the flood zone, we quickly changed plans and headed back to our home asap to gather some things. Our ward was nothing shy of fantastic; we had multiple offers from ward members to stay in their homes and others calling in to check up on us. We stayed with the Robinsons, who opened their home and their cupboards to us and Grandma Barbara, and to whom we will always be grateful!!! They are both locals, so along with a weatherproofed home and generator, they were able to give us their insight into the storm and how bad it really would be. Their insights proved calming compared to many of the sensationalized news stories, particularly when the news failed to talk much about Delaware in their forecasts. Baby Hannah weathered the storm well and we enjoyed our stay at the Robinsons. By Tuesday, most of the storm had blown over and we ventured back to our own home hoping and praying it wasn't flooded. It wasn't!!! We were so grateful and relieved and I know it was because of all of the prayers said in our behalf. Our little house weathered it great and we were able to unpack and move things off of the top shelves. It is incredible to think of all of the adventures and change we have experienced since moving out here. We're glad to report that flooded house is not one of those adventures! We feel very fortunate and blessed that we were spared when so many other people lost homes and things and our hearts go out to them. We now have a better idea how to weather these storms and will definitely keep closer tabs on them in the future. I now know:
- that it's probably not a good idea to rent a home in a flood-prone area surrounded by large old trees
what things I would take in evacuating my home- what things to move from low to high in the event of a flood
- that I need to prepare 72-hour kits asap
- that it's wise to prepare for the worst and hope for the best

Yes, Tyler and I visited Edgar Allan Poe's grave Halloween weekend :).
